On 17th of November 2011, Analytica Think Tank and Konrad Adenauer Foundation Skopje organized a Conference on Regional Security Dynamics in the Western Balkans. The Conference gathered many distinguished experts, decision makers in the field of security and defense as well as general public, media and civil society representatives from the region and beyond.
As it was stressed from the beginning, the region is united in pursuing the goal of stability and long lasting security. Most of the countries also share a strong devotion to join the Euro-Atlantic structures, although it is clear that there is some more work to be done in the field of their approximation to the necessary standards. Corruption, organized crime and the possibility of social unrest were recognized as the remaining threats that need to be dealt with.
The general security situation in the region was evaluated as stable, without any particular concerns for Macedonia. Furthermore, former commander of the NATO mission in Macedonia (2004 – 2005) Dennis Blease confirmed and pointed out that Macedonia meets all of the highest requirements necessary for joining NATO immediately after solving the bilateral issue with Greece. However, the Greek position should not discourage Macedonia to continue its recognized and appreciated efforts in contributing to all of the regional and multilateral initiatives, as well as the peace keeping missions around the globe.
The goal of identifying the security situation, recognizing the potential and existing treats as well as evaluating the cooperation among the Western Balkan countries in the field of security was fully met. Most importantly, besides the contribution of the official speakers, representatives of the civil society and the media got a unique opportunity to raise questions and express their concerns and opinions to the participating decision makers and experts.
