The country has also low goals for renewables and for energy efficiency for 2020 and 2018 respectively and no goals for emissions reduction. She further explained that Macedonia’s energy supply and demand side is dominated by fossil fuels and characterized with waste of energy. Macedonia has introduced some reforms in the area of energy efficiency and renewables such as the obligation municipalities to adopt energy efficiency programs, feed-in tariffs for electricity from renewables, local gasification projects, building of co-generation utilities etc. The challenges that remain to be tackled are the heat market, electricity market liberalization, energy poverty and similar. Suggested solutions include support of co-generation utilities, improving the heat market, setting up more ambitious energy and climate goals etc.
